SBBC Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration

A full moon above us, a culture that connects us.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is more than a full moon and a mooncake. It carries the meaning of reunion, thoughts of loved ones, sharing and good wishes. This September, SBBC is hosting a festive cultural celebration, offering children a relaxed, enjoyable and meaningful way to experience the charm of a traditional Chinese festival.

We want children to do more than listen to a teacher talk about Chinese culture. We want them to take part in it, experience it and enjoy it for themselves.

The event brings together traditional Mid-Autumn refreshments, cultural activities, fun challenges and surprise prizes. In a joyful atmosphere, children can discover the festival's origins, customs and cultural meaning, while making their own Mid-Autumn memories with other children.

Whether or not they are currently learning Chinese, children can explore Chinese festivals and culture naturally through experiences like this.

Discover the stories of Mid-Autumn

Why do people in China admire the moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival?

How did mooncakes become the festival's best-known traditional food?

What stories connect Chang'e, the Jade Rabbit and the moon?

What special traditions do people in different places follow to celebrate?

On the day, we will weave these cultural themes into relaxed, enjoyable activities. Children need no preparation and do not need to worry about getting an answer wrong. What matters is thinking and taking part together, discovering more about the festival along the way.

We hope to make culture more than something on a page: an experience children can see, taste, discuss and take part in.

Festive refreshments · A taste of Mid-Autumn

No Mid-Autumn celebration would be complete without mooncakes and traditional refreshments.

We will prepare refreshments associated with the festival, so children can taste traditional foods while learning about their festive meaning.

A small mooncake is more than a seasonal treat. It also symbolises wholeness and reunion. For children, discovering a festival through taste can be one of the most natural and memorable ways to learn.

We hope everyone can slow down for a moment, enjoy the flavours of Mid-Autumn and share in the warm, lively atmosphere.

Brainstorming · Explore culture together

Learning about culture can be a lot of fun.

The event will feature Mid-Autumn trivia, cultural quizzes and interactive challenges. Through observing, guessing, discussing and thinking, children can gradually discover more about the festival.

There are no dull exams or traditional classroom lectures here.

Instead, we hope children will be eager to join in:

'I didn't know that was a Mid-Autumn tradition!'

'Why is the moon so important in Chinese culture?'

'So that's the story of the Jade Rabbit!'

When children become curious, cultural learning truly begins.

Plenty of prizes · Surprises along the way

A celebration should have a few surprises, too.

We have prepared a range of small gifts and activity prizes, giving children the chance to enjoy a Mid-Autumn surprise as they join in.

Whether they put up their hand in a cultural quiz, take an active part in an activity or complete a small challenge, there are opportunities to earn a reward.

What matters most to us is not how much children already know, but their willingness to participate, express themselves, try and explore.

We hope every child arrives looking forward to the event and leaves with happy memories and something gained from the experience.

Connect with culture through celebration

For children living in Australia, there are many ways to discover Chinese culture.

It might be a Chinese lesson, a song, a story, a traditional food or a special festival experience.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a wonderful opportunity for children to get to know Chinese culture.

Through real festive settings and activities, we hope children will learn more than the name 'Mid-Autumn Festival'. We hope they will gradually understand its connections to family, reunion, sharing, good wishes and passing on cultural traditions.

For children already learning Chinese, this is a chance to connect language with culture in real life. For those just beginning to discover Chinese culture, we hope the event offers a relaxed and happy first experience.

About this celebration

We hope this will be more than an ordinary festive gathering.

It can be a Mid-Autumn moment shared by children and their families, as well as an opportunity to discover Chinese culture, make new friends and try something new.

With lanterns, mooncakes, stories, activities and laughter, children can experience Mid-Autumn in their own way.

Years from now, they may not remember which quiz question they answered. But they may still remember the moon they saw that evening, the mooncakes they tasted, the small gifts they received and the joy of celebrating together.

One full moon, a moment of reunion.

One experience, a lasting cultural memory.

We look forward to coming together this Mid-Autumn Festival.
